1. DTC Definition
DTC P3019: Battery Block 9 Becomes Weak
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is part of the P3011–P3029 series, where each code corresponds to a specific battery block within the hybrid vehicle (HV) battery pack. P3019 specifically indicates that Battery Block 9 has been detected as weak due to abnormal internal resistance or electromotive voltage.
The HV battery is composed of multiple modules connected in series. For example, in some configurations, 28 modules are connected in series, with each module containing six 1.2 V cells, producing a total of 201.6 V. The battery smart unit (also referred to as the battery ECU) monitors battery block voltage at multiple locations—typically 14 to 20 locations depending on the vehicle model.
2. Detection Conditions
2.1 Monitor Description
If there is an abnormal internal resistance or electromotive voltage in the battery blocks, the battery smart unit determines that a malfunction has occurred. When the malfunction detection condition is satisfied, the hybrid vehicle control ECU (or power management control ECU) illuminates the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) and sets the DTC.
2.2 Typical Enabling Conditions
While specific numerical thresholds may vary by vehicle model, the general enabling conditions for this monitor include:
- The vehicle is being driven (the HV battery SOC is maintained at a constant level by the HV control ECU during driving)
- The battery smart unit is actively monitoring block voltages
- The system detects deviation in internal resistance or voltage beyond acceptable limits
2.3 Important Note on DTC Setting
P3019 (and related DTCs from P3011 to P3029) will not be set unless the vehicle is driven for approximately 10 minutes after clearing the DTCs. This means that simply clearing codes and restarting the vehicle will not immediately re-trigger the code—a drive cycle is required for the monitor to run and confirm the fault.
3. Inspection Procedure / Diagnostic Tests
3.1 Step 1: Check DTC Output
Procedure:
- Connect the Techstream diagnostic tool to the DLC3 (Data Link Connector 3)
- Turn the power switch to IG (Ignition ON) position
- Navigate to: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Trouble Codes
- Check if DTCs are output
Result Interpretation:
- If DTC P0A1F-123 is output → Go to the inspection procedure relevant to the output DTC
- If DTC P0A1F-123 is NOT output → Continue to Step 2
3.2 Step 2: Check Battery Smart Unit (Voltage Imbalance Test)
This is the core diagnostic test for identifying a weak battery block.
Procedure:
- Ensure the safety of the areas in front and rear of the vehicle
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
- Turn the power switch to READY (vehicle in ready-on state)
- Navigate to: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List / Battery Block Vol – V01 to V20
- Fully warm up the engine and turn the air conditioning OFF
- Firmly depress the brake pedal with your left foot
- Move the shift lever to the D (Drive) position
- Record each battery block voltage (Battery Block Vol – V01 to V20) while fully depressing the accelerator pedal
- Compare the battery block voltages between the even and odd number groups in each combination
Malfunction Threshold:
- Check if the difference in voltage of each combination is 0.3 V or more
Result Interpretation:
- If voltage difference is 0.3 V or more → The battery block is weak
- HINT: Difference in voltage of each combination may be 0.3 V or more due to a battery smart unit internal error
4. Fault Area Identification
4.1 Primary Fault Area
The primary fault area for DTC P3019 is Battery Block 9 within the HV battery assembly. This indicates that Block 9 has developed abnormal internal resistance or reduced electromotive voltage compared to other blocks.
4.2 Secondary Fault Area
The battery smart unit itself may be faulty. As noted in the diagnostic procedure, a voltage difference of 0.3 V or more can sometimes be caused by a battery smart unit internal error rather than an actual battery block failure.
4.3 Associated DTCs
P3019 is often accompanied by other related DTCs, including:
- P0A80 – Replace Hybrid Battery
- Other P301x codes indicating weakness in adjacent battery blocks
5. Treatment / Repair Methods
5.1 Diagnostic Confirmation First
Before proceeding with any repair, confirm whether the issue is with the battery block or the battery smart unit:
| Finding | Action |
|---|---|
| Voltage difference ≥ 0.3 V, battery smart unit confirmed functional | Proceed with battery block repair/replacement |
| Voltage difference ≥ 0.3 V, battery smart unit suspected faulty | Replace battery smart unit |
5.2 Option 1: Individual Battery Module Replacement
For vehicles with serviceable battery modules (e.g., Gen II Prius), the weak Block 9 module can be replaced individually. This involves:
- Removing the HV battery assembly
- Identifying and removing the specific weak module (Block 9)
- Replacing it with a reconditioned or new module of matching specifications
- Reassembling and testing the battery pack
5.3 Option 2: Complete Battery Rebuild or Replacement
If multiple blocks are weak or the battery pack has high mileage, more comprehensive solutions include:
- Complete rebuild kit – Replacing all modules with reconditioned or new cells
- Remanufactured battery – Replacing the entire battery pack with a professionally rebuilt unit
- New OEM battery – Full replacement with a new factory battery assembly
5.4 Option 3: Battery Smart Unit Replacement
If diagnostics confirm the battery smart unit is the source of the voltage reading errors, replace the battery smart unit according to the manufacturer’s service procedure.
5.5 Post-Repair Procedure
After completing any repair:
- Clear all DTCs using Techstream
- Turn the power switch OFF
- Turn the power switch to READY and turn Techstream ON
- Perform a universal trip (drive cycle)
- Drive the vehicle for approximately 10 minutes to allow the monitor to run
- Recheck for DTCs: Navigate to Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Trouble Codes
- Verify that no permanent DTCs are output—if a permanent DTC remains, the system is still malfunctioning
